What are the differences in scent concentration?

Scents come in different strengths. The main ingredient in perfume is alcohol water. The content of a discount fragrance offered in the Beauty Bay online shop differs from expensive perfumes.

Pure perfume has the strongest concentration. It's normally between 20%-25%. It is also the most expensive and costs up to and over £100 for a small bottle. It is a luxury and should be used sparingly, not just because of the cost but because of its high concentration of perfume. It normally comes packaged as a splash-on.

Eau De Perfume is the next level down. Its concentration can vary from 15%-20%. A lot more reasonably priced, it's still a long-lasting perfume and it normally comes packaged as a spray unless otherwise stated.

Eau De Toilette is the most popular type of our discount fragrance in the Beauty Bay online shop. It has a concentration of up to 14%. Whilst this type of discount fragrance may not last as long as less expensive products, it is the most affordable. Eau De Toilette normally comes packaged as a spray unless otherwise stated.

Eau Fraiche has a very low perfume concentration and is also a discount fragrance. It's normally alcohol free too, which makes this discount fragrance ideal for warmer climates.

Eau De Cologne and Aftershave have very low perfume concentrations, normally around 5%. This product, offered by Beauty Bay as a discount fragrance, is not as popular as it used to be as it is weak and tends not to last long. Aftershave, however, because of its low perfume concentration, is an ideal product out of our range of discount fragrance to use on the face and will be more soothing than Eau De Toilette after shaving. Aftershave Balm has a similar concentration to regular aftershave but comes in a lotion or balm. Aftershave is a discount fragrance that normally comes as a splash-on unless it states otherwise.

What are the different types of scent notes?

Each scent consists of 3 layers, with each layer having its own individual ingredients (known as notes).

Top notes are scents you can smell as soon as the product has been applied. The first smell will normally be the alcohol content of the perfume. Top notes are normally lighter than the other notes.

After a short while, the top notes disperse and the middle notes become more apparent. These are known as the heart of the perfume and the other notes centre on this layer. The middle notes define the character of the perfume as it's normally this layer that settles on the skin.

The bottom (or base) notes provide a base for the middle notes to linger on. The base notes determine how long a perfume lasts. As there are only a few notes that last long, the majority of perfumes use the same base notes.
