Game Changer | The Beach Wave Maker

With warmer weather fast approaching, we thought it only best to debrief on every stylist’s secret to surf-perfect hair. The spring/summer catwalks were rife with bohemian hairstyles – romantic waves and loose curls that evoked a relaxed, carefree look. Above all, texture is everything this season – a modern alternative to perfectly curled styles that calls to mind Giselle-esque levels of gently tousled ‘done-to-look-undone’ perfection.

Whilst my friends consider me blessed to sport a head of perfectly (and naturally) straight hair, I struggle to get a wave (let alone a curl) to last for more than a few hours. Like most, I’m on a quest to achieve that coveted piecey, lived-in style that looks perfect when paired with spring’s dewy skin and doll lashes. My haircare dreams are made of loose waves with texture and volume, not too perfect or curled; and above all, with minimal effort required.

The One

The salty solution? Sachajuan’s Ocean Spray, a hair spray/styling spray hybrid, which is just about the closest thing to sea water without going too ‘beachy’. The vibrantly-scented contents of the elegant and understated packaging give my poker-straight hair plenty of body at the roots and lends a flirty, mussed up effect to the lengths. It’s morning after hair; sultry, bedhead locks with natural-looking volume and a grown-up take on texture.

Some salt sprays leave hair crunchy and frizzy, but this one softens as it tousles, and gives fine hair extra oomph without the flyaways. It has just the right amount of sea salt to get lasting texture, but (thanks to the addition of castor oil) leaves hair silky and touchable. It’s also incredibly lightweight, so gives hair bounce and swish for a casual, relaxed look.

Rather than create the style too perfectly, imagine your beach waves as a product of the elements. I spray this throughout towel-dried hair, comb it through to coat the strands, then blow-dry and finger-comb for Bardot-style volume and a subtle enhancement of my hair’s natural texture.

When spritzed onto dry hair, it gives a naturally tousled look – plus volume – without crunching it up. I use it to revive second day or just curled hair – scrunching it through my ends for an instant injection of texture and separation that lasts all day long.
