From sheet masks to peel masks, lace masks, and bubble masks, the face mask category has evolved into one of the most exciting and innovative areas of the beauty world. The latest frontier, some might say.
That said, the skincare industry is also known for being gimmicky, which means that sometimes it can be hard sift the science from the silly… and just when I thought things couldn’t get weirder than applying snail slime to my face, a magnetic face mask landed on my desk.
Yep, that’s right, instead of removing Dr Brandt’s Magnetight Age-Definer Mask with warm water and a flannel like you do with regular masks, it’s whisked away with a magnet, which gently lifts product and build-up from your pores.
Typically, I’d have been instantly sceptical, but Dr Brandt is renowned for being one of the most pioneering dermatology brands out there, working with some of the world’s foremost skincare specialists to create the kind of breakthrough technological advancements that really shake up the beauty world. Plus, this mask sounded like it had a major fun factor…
First, let’s talk science. The basic premise is that while moving the positively charged magnet across your face, the negatively charged particles in the mask leap from your skin to the magnet, bringing with them impurities and pollutants from the skin. As well as removing the product, this negative charge also has the benefit of stimulating cells, increasing circulation, and triggering collagen production.
The thick, dark grey concoction has a dense, creamy texture that applies easily and should be left to dry down for 5-10 minutes – just like a regular face mask. You then remove it with the included magnet (wrapped in tissue, because if the product gets on the magnet itself, it’s hella hard to remove).
In this single swipe, the magnet removes every trace of the formula but an antioxidant and peptide-rich serum, which can then be massaged in (another perk of this mask is that as no water/scrubbing is required to remove it, all of the potent ingredients deposited are left to seep into the skin). Sound like fun? It’s every bit as satisfying to do as it sounds.
Not many masks have an immediate effect, but this actually makes my skin look brighter and smoother from the get-go. It’s also that rarity – a mask which performs for every skin type – thanks to its anti-aging and detoxifying properties, and because there’s no peeling or scrubbing involved, it’s great for sensitive skin. Plus, it’s a hell of a lot of fun to use, and makes for great Instagram #content (and you can’t put a price on that).
