I’d be a poor excuse for a beauty editor if I wasn’t up for trying all and any of the weird and wonderful beauty products that get sent my way to review – the latest of which was Pro Teeth Whitening Co.’s Activated Charcoal Powder.
Granted, it isn’t the weirdest thing I’ve had to try, but it’s definitely more of a conversation piece than my regular tube of Oral-B Pro Expert Toothpaste… Everyone who’s entered my bathroom in the past month: “What’s that jar of powder on your basin??”
My answer: “If you’re really into your dental hygiene, but can’t be bothered fussing around with complex teeth-whitening kits, this is for you.”
Charcoal in dental care is actually nothing new – in fact, the practice of using charcoal to clean teeth dates back to Ancient Egypt. Plus, this is not just your average charcoal…activated charcoal is heated to create large pores in the mineral – these are super absorptive and work to draw in and trap chemicals and impurities.
It’s especially effective at reducing the discolouration caused by coffee, tea, wine, and cigarette smoke – these contain tannins which bind to teeth, leaving a yellowish stain that is hard to remove with regular toothpaste.
We’re all seen the new charcoal toothpastes taking over Instagram, but adding this finely ground charcoal powder to your teeth-brushing routine has the exact same results, while incidentally being much more cost-effective – you literally only need the tiniest amount.
Super easy to use (especially in comparison to regular teeth whitening kits) – simply apply toothpaste to your toothbrush, run it beneath the tap, and then dip it in the activated charcoal powder before brushing your teeth as normal for two minutes. It does feel a little odd at first because your toothpaste takes on a grainy texture, but (thankfully) there’s no weird taste.
Far better than any teeth-whitening kit I’ve ever tried, this causes zero sensitivity, and doesn’t work by simply staining your teeth white. You won’t see results after a single use, but I’ve been dipping into the jar twice daily for the past month and my teeth are quite noticeably brighter, whiter, and shinier. Try it yourself and expect your teeth to shine on – no need to cut down on coffee just yet.
