Beauty Bay: Perfume

What are the differences in perfume concentration?

Perfume comes in different strengths. The main ingredient in fragrance is alcohol water. The content of perfume differs depending on the product type.

Perfume is the strongest concentration. It's normally between 20%-25%. It is also the most expensive and costs up to and over £100 for a small bottle. Pure perfume is a luxury and should be used sparingly, not just because of the cost but because of its high concentration of perfume. It normally comes packaged as a splash-on.

Eau De Perfume is the next level down from perfume. Its concentration can vary from 15%-20%. A lot more reasonably priced, it's still a long-lasting fragrance and it normally comes packaged as a spray unless otherwise stated.

Eau De Toilette is the most popular type of fragrance for both men and women. It has a fragrance concentration up to 14%. Whilst it may not last as long as the above 2, it's the most affordable. Eau De Toilette normally comes packaged as a spray unless otherwise stated.

Eau Fraiche has a very low fragrance concentration. It's normally alcohol free too, which makes it ideal for warmer climates.

Eau De Cologne and Aftershave have very low fragrance concentrations, normally around 5%. These are not as popular as they used to be as they're weak and tend not to last long. Aftershave, however, because of its low fragrance concentration, is ideal to use on the face and will be more soothing than Eau De Toilette after shaving. Aftershave Balm has a similar concentration to regular aftershave but comes in a lotion or balm. Aftershaves are normally a splash-on unless it states otherwise.

What are the different types of perfume notes?

Each perfume consists of 3 layers, with each layer having its own individual ingredients (known as notes).

Top notes are scents you can smell as soon as the perfume has been applied. The first smell will normally be the alcohol content of the fragrance. Top notes are normally lighter than the other notes.

After a short while, the top notes disperse and the middle notes become more apparent. These are known as the heart of the fragrance and the other notes centre on this layer. The middle notes define the character of the fragrance as it's normally this layer that settles on the skin.

The bottom (or base) notes provide a base for the middle notes to linger on. The base notes determine how long a fragrance lasts. As there are only a few notes that last long, the majority of fragrances use the same base notes.
