I used to think that the key to mastering hairstyles relied upon a certain cocktail of mousses, gels, balms, and sprays… wrong – the secret to success starts in the shower.
That’s right, the humble shampoo is more than just a cleanser for your hair – and not all hairtypes and styles are created equal, meaning that shampoos have to differ widely. The best have superpower formulas and carefully curated ingredients lists designed to help you achieve your haircare dreams, however specific they may be….
I spoke to five Beauty Bay staffers to establish the best shampoos for every tress type – here are our picks for long, frizzy, curly, and everything in between…
With long (and heavy) curly hair, I often struggle to create the perfect bounce if you will. Buying into every ‘Curl Defining’ and ‘Frizz-Free’ hair product known to man comes with masses of disappointment, yet surprisingly, I think I’ve found the one. Briogeo’s Curl Charisma Rice Amino + Avocado Hydrating Shampoo works to cleanse, hydrate and revitalise. Packed with Vitamin E, Shea Butter and obviously Avocado Oil, the lightweight formula softens and cares for my hair without weighing it down, creating that full, frizz-free spring.

In a nutshell, the Fudge Clean Blonde Violet Shampoo is AMAZING. I’ve been bleach blonde for 15 years, and used this for around 8 of them. Not only does it remove all (and I mean ALL) traces of brassy, yellow tones but it smells amazing and doesn’t leave your hair feeling dry or brittle either. I massage it in and leave for around 2-3 minutes (err on the side of caution – it’s SO good at toning, super light blondes might end up grey if you leave it too long!) and it without fail, tones my hair back to it’s platinum blonde, icy best.

With flat, semi straight hair that tends to fall in the kind of slight wave that suits no one, I straighten my hair every single day without fail. As a result it tends to be damaged and dry at the ends, quickly becoming brittle and dull. The Keratin enriched formula of Wella’s Luxe Oil Keratin Protect Shampoo works really well to keep my hair stronger for longer, whilst making it incredibly soft and shiny, too. The mild formula is gentle on my scalp, yet it still cleans effectively – and in conjunction with the Keratin Restore Mask, my hair is the healthiest it’s ever been.

Thick hair can be both a blessing and a curse, and when it’s as long and heavy as mine, it tends to feel more like the latter – my hair is so heavy that even with the best volumizing sprays and mousses, I struggle to get body into the roots. That was until my hairdresser recommended I try Alterna’s Bamboo Abundant Volume Shampoo, which makes fighting flat hair a much easier battle. It efficiently removes oil and product build-up, creating the perfect base to keep roots lifted and somehow making my lengths feel as light as a feather. Buoyant, bedhead waves are now a daily occurrence – I (and I suspect (at the rate my bottle is emptying), my boyfriend) 100% recommend.

I recently dared myself to let my hairdresser chop more than a few inches off my hair, leaving me with choppy above-the-shoulder hair – I LOVE it! The shorter hair requires a new styling routine involving a LOT of sea salt mists, and texturizing sprays since actual beachy waves are unlikely (I live in central Manchester…), however it does mean that my hair can get extremely weighed down and begin to look dull, this until I discovered my new shower hero, the Joico Clarifying Shampoo which gently cleanses away all that product build up, leaving my hair looking brighter, and more voluminous.
