The Blogger Behind @dirtyboysgetclean Shares His Top Tips On Caring For Male Skin

If you’re a self-confessed skincare addict and an avid scroller on Instagram, chances are you’ve probably stumbled across Matt (aka @dirtyboysgetclean) and his famous shelfies and hit ‘follow’. To say that Matt is beauty-obsessed would be an understatement – his shelfies and stories attract thousands of views and floods of likes and comments and he dishes out skincare advice and product recommendations on a daily basis.

We caught up with the king of shelfies to quiz him on his skincare tips, his favourite products, and to get his view on how to look after male skin.

“As a male in the beauty industry I find that when speaking with guys about skincare they can tend to be less sure of what they are doing compared to women. I feel like there is a large void in the beauty industry when it comes to including unisex products and unisex appeal. While I do believe that there are some factors that can contribute to women and men having different skin concerns– skin is still skin, no matter your gender. I believe that the important thing to remember when it comes to taking care of your skin is that each one of us is different. My skin needs might be very different than yours, and that’s okay. When it comes to men’s skin I think a common misconception is that men have tough skin that can take anything thrown at it. However, I actually have sensitive, dry, redness-prone skin. I want to take a look at some of the top concerns when it comes to men’s skincare and some products that BEAUTY BAY carries that I recommend personally”

Fine lines around eyes

“Fine lines around the eyes tends to be a big concern – I find that a lot of guys ask about it. The skin around the eye area is thinner, and more prone to wrinkles and damage. When treating the skin around the eyes I like to focus on products that are going to give the skin some sort of benefits over time and then also use something that will give the eye area immediate results. One of my favorite products for the eye area is Wide Awake Brightening Eye Cream by Saturday Skin. This is one of my most-used eye products because it is a glossy-like gel cream that addresses both puffiness and dark circles but also is great for preventing fine lines. This is going to be great for all skin types and an eye cream that I recommend to so many people. The beauty in this product to me is in the texture. It is something that sinks in well but also leaves a glossy, healthy-looking sheen to the eye area. I like that this eye cream can also be used both AM and PM because the texture is just so great for both routines. I just like to apply half a pump and tap between my middle fingers then lightly tap under the eye area. Another product I really love for the eye area is “Un” Cover-Up by RMS. The reason I love this product so much is because it immediately helps conceal darkness and makes the under-eye area look more youthful. One of the biggest pluses of this product is that it also contains some great oils to help treat the eye area like coconut oil, cocoa seed butter, jojoba, and it also contains a mix of essential vitamins, fatty acids and nutrients while delivering antioxidant protection against free radical aggressors. This is such a natural looking product, which I know is important to most men when it comes to wearing any sort of makeup. The formulation is super easy to work with, all you have to do is melt some of the product between your fingers and gently tap underneath the eye area. The creamy-like texture just sits so well under the eye-area, and instantly brightens and smooths the appearance.”

Breakouts

“When it comes to skin I know that a major concern is pimples. We all dread them and want to get rid of them ASAP once they show up. I find that treating a blemish simply is the best way. I absolutely adore the B Well Organic Tea Tree Oil by Briogeo – tea tree oil as a spot treatment is a great way to get rid of a blemish when it’s first forming. Take a cotton swab and apply some water to it then a drop of the tea tree oil and apply directly to the zit – this helps to reduce the size and duration of the zit. Sand & Sky Brilliant Skin Purifying Pink Clay Mask is also a great mask for spots. This mask is great for acne spots because it’s very purifying – I love to use it as a spot treatment on a blemish for 15-20 minutes. I personally find that going in with harsh products on blemishes is just not the best way to treat them. I like to find more gentle but effective products to eradicate a blemish.”

Dry skin

“Dryness is a concern that I find a lot of men asking about as well. Personally, I do suffer from dry skin so I am always looking for products that will add some moisture back into my skin. One of the products I love using is the Artichoke Superfood Firming Night Moisturiser by Dr. Botanicals. This moisturiser is so rich and beautiful. It literally just melts into my skin. It is formulated with artichoke which is high in antioxidants, and grapeseed oil which is going to hydrate and nourish the skin. I love to apply this cream at night and just massage it into my skin. It’s not greasy at all, you just wake up with supple skin. Another product I really adore for dry skin is Saturday Skin Waterfall. This cream is gorgeous. It’s got a glossy gel-like texture to it that just leaves my skin looking and feeling so healthy. I especially love this when it’s warm outside because its lightweight without compromising any moisture to the skin. I love to keep this one in the mini-fridge so that it is cool when applied.”

Exposed pores

“For large pores I would recommend trying the Australian Pink Clay Exfoliating Treatment by Sand & Sky. This product is so special because it exfoliates while also purifying the skin. I love this because it leaves my skin feeling and looking so clean. I find that incorporating a treatment like this into my routine a few days a week helps to keeps my pores clear and prevents clogging. I massage the product into my skin for 30 seconds then let it sit for five minutes before rinsing. It’s such a quick but effective treatment to help the appearance of enlarged pores. The Glycolic Acid Toner by Mario Badescu is also brilliant for enlarged and congested pores. This toner is formulated with 2% Glycolic Acid, Grapefruit Extract and Aloe Gel. I love using this after cleansing on a cotton round. Its great especially during the warmer months to really clear out your pores.”

Oily skin

“When it comes to issues with oily skin, I really love the Enzyme Cleansing Gel by Mario Badescu. This is a great cleanser to start your morning off with to battle the oiliness. In my opinion it’s very important to treat the oiliness from the very first step. It is a gel-based cleanser with enzymes, but you can leave it on the skin for a few minutes to help exfoliate. I love that it is formulated with papaya and grapefruit because they’ll really going to help sort of get rid of any dead skin cells on the top layer of the skin. This has been one of my favorite cleansers for several years because I find that it is does a great job at cleansing without stripping the skin.”

Dull skin

“Dullness is something that comes up quite often when discussing male skin concerns. Oskia makes a great product called Get Up & Glow. This serum is very special because it does so many things at once. It gives you a little glow automatically because it contains light-reflecting particles. But aside from that instant gratification, it also works over time to brighten skin and reduce dullness. I love to apply this in the morning after cleansing and toning. It’s kind of like an all-in-one product for those who don’t want to fuss with several steps in their routine. Rodial also makes a brilliant product that is perfect for dull skin – the Rodial Dragons Blood Cleansing Water. This cleansing water is formulated with vitamin B3, Dragon’s Blood, rosewater, and hyaluronic acid. It plumps and revives your skin. I love saturating a cotton round with this and swiping it across the face – your complexion will look much more healthy with consistent use.”
