How To Secretly Wear Makeup To The Gym

Okay, I have a confession to make… I wear makeup to the gym. Yup, base makeup, mascara, blusher, bronzer, even eyeshadow (if it’s still intact by 6.30pm).

As a beauty editor I’m well aware that it’s not great for your skin if you wear makeup when exercising, but take a look around you next time you’re on the treadmill and you’ll notice that it’s actually a pretty common occurrence.

The thing is, it’s not always super practical to turn up barefaced – I work out right after I finish work, and some people head to the gym on their way to work or in their lunch break. Added to that, not everyone feels confident heading out with no makeup on, or has the time to remove and reapply it.

Fortunately, my experience as a beauty editor has taught me how to get around this with products which a) look undetectable on the skin (no makeup shaming here!) and b) aren’t actually that bad for your skin (so you don’t have to feel too guilty about wearing them).

It’s time to make notes…

Most foundations are simply too heavy for gym-wear, but a BB or CC cream is much lighter so will both feel more comfortable and look more natural. This lighter than light formula adjusts to your skintone to provide the most natural finish, and has the helpful addition of SPF30 – ideal if you’re taking your workout into the great outdoors.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t feel 100% if my eyebrows aren’t 100%. I’m normally an Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz kinda gal, but on gym days, this brow gel alone keeps my brows looking groomed and shaped – it’s not quite as bold as my favoured look but it adds just enough colour and volume, and looks completely natural.

It’s called Sport for a reason – yep, this mascara is specifically designed for us gym-goers. In a quick flick, it gives lashes a sweat/tears/water-resistant coating that literally does not budge, no matter how tough your spin class is. What’s more, it’s jet-black (so you don’t need to layer it) and it holds a curl better than most lifting mascaras I’ve used – no droopy 5pm lashes, hooray.

If your workouts are hardcore, you’ll struggle to find makeup that doesn’t sweat off as you train. As well as acting much like a nail varnish topcoat does to seal everything in, this particular setting spray owes its success to its clever formula – designed to maintain skin’s natural temperature no matter how much the heat rises, and therefore prevent makeup from evaporating.

The trick to keeping it subtle is avoiding bright or dark colours. Fortunately, Gerbera is neither – in fact it’s the closest colour I’ve found to a natural flush (just use a light hand). Even better, this 2-in-1 formula does double-duty and covers both cheeks and lips –using the same colour helps to pull your look together and make it look more natural.

If you have problem pimples that need covering up, this semi-sheer concealer deposits just enough colour to correct without feeling heavy (plus it’s easily layerable). No matter how much you pack on, you can do so feeling 100% guilt-free – the formula is all natural and 100% organic (a blend of coconut oil, cocoa seed butter, jojoba oil, and rosemary extract).
