6 Marine Ingredients & Their Skin Benefits

The sea – it’s full of weird and wonderful creatures (as well as some downright scary ones) but did you know that it’s also a treasure trove of skin-loving ingredients? Yes, we’re familiar with the fact that oranges are rich in vitamin C and tea tree is great for breakouts, but trust us when we say that marine ingredients like seaweed and sea grapes (who knew there was such a thing!?) are the relatively unheard of skincare heroes that you need to be investing in. We’ve dived in to find out about all of the latest and greatest marine ingredients and what benefits they offer for our skin.

Sea Kelp

First on the list is sea kelp, a type of brown seaweed that grows all over the world. When it comes to skincare, there’s nothing this leafy ingredient can’t do. Packed full of antioxidants, sea kelp penetrates the skin and breaks down toxins, resulting in fresher-looking complexions. It’s rich in fatty acids and hydrating ingredients that help the skin to retain moisture, as well as having anti-inflammatory properties that reduces the pooling of blood underneath the skin’s surface, which can result in redness. Essentially, it’s the most nutrient-rich of all the seaweed species, so it’s a good place to start your marine skincare journey.

There are so many different types of seaweed that it can get a little confusing, but as a whole, seaweed is naturally high in iodine, minerals, salts, and vitamins that are all super beneficial for our faces .It’s rich in vitamin E that helps to condition, as well as being full of humectants that draw moisture into the skin and keep it there. It’s great for all skin types, but particularly oily and combination as it has balancing properties, helping your skin to stay hydrated without feeling greasy.

Sea Grape

Who knew there were grapes in the sea? Also known as green caviar, sea grapes are lots of tiny green plants that are part of the algae family – their spherical shape that forms in little bunches is what gives them their name. One of the more unusual marine ingredients, that doesn’t mean that sea grapes are any less effective in your skincare. They’re rich in vitamins A, C, and E meaning that they brighten and balance the skin, reduce inflammation, and improve elasticity and softness. The result? Healthy-looking, naturally glowing skin.

Sea Buckthorn

Found in skincare, haircare, and bodycare, sea buckthorn is a hero ingredient that you need to keep on your radar. Used for centuries in natural skincare, this wonder ingredient is filled to the brim with vitamins, antioxidants, and fatty acids. It’s packed full of vitamin C (way more than your average orange) meaning that it’s brightening and evens out skin tone. The other vitamins, antioxidants, and fatty acids help to boost elasticity, increase hydration, reduce inflammation, as well as fighting against acne-causing bacteria. Padina Pavonica

As exotic as it sounds, padina pavonica is a type of seaweed that you can usually find on the Mediterranean coast. A firm favourite of our go-to skincare brand, Elemis, padina pavonica has similar properties to normal seaweed in that it draws moisture into the skin and makes sure that it doesn’t escape again. It’s also rich in fatty acids, which makes your skin feel softer, smoother, and more supple.

Yet another form of algae – newsflash, it’s great for your skin – chlorella is a marine ingredient that can transform your skin. Rich in chlorophyll, which If you can remember from high school science is the ingredient that gives plants their green colour, this ingredient has strong antioxidant powers, as well as being rich in vitamins, iron, and zinc. When included in skincare, zinc helps to calm irritation whilst vitamin C brightens, resulting in overall healthier, happier skin.
