Ingredient Focus: Mineral Pink Salt

We all know that overdoing it on salty foods makes our faces look puffy, so the idea of using salt in your skincare routine might seem like a strange one… However, it turns out that salt isn’t entirely off the table in the beauty world – salt scrubs, salt baths, and even salt facials are on the rise, and with K-beauty fave Too Cool For School launching a line of mineral pink salt infused skincare, we decided to find out what all the hype is about.

Harvested from salt beds that have been covered with lava, snow, and ice for over 200 million years, mineral salt is free from modern day pollutants, and so is one of the purest salts on earth. Far more than just a dinner table seasoning or decoration for your nightstand, mineral pink salt carries detoxifying and relaxing negative ions alongside a cocktail of vitamins and minerals, all of which which provide a multitude of health benefits for inside and out.

Read on to find out why you should consider using skincare products with mineral pink salts in their ingredient lists.

How does it work?

Mineral pink salt has a unique pink colour which is caused by its makeup of elements – including iron, potassium, calcium, and magnesium – all of which are ingredients that skin needs. Fortunately, they’re also small enough for the skin to absorb, so can provide amazing benefits when applied topically.

Salt has absorbent properties that soak up sebum and rinse away impurities like dirt, sweat, and makeup, so is a great ingredient to look out for in cleansers and masks (especially if you have congestion in your pores and are prone to oiliness and breakouts). It’s also antibacterial, so helps to kill and stave off bacteria – ideal if you suffer from acne. In addition to drawing out the nasties, mineral salts also give back to skin, by way of hydration and nourishment. The calcium, magnesium, and potassium help to strengthen skin’s moisture barrier and improve hydration levels.

Why should I use it?

If your skin is dehydrated… The salt that absorbs gets stored in the upper layer of skin, which plumps it up and strengthens the skin’s barrier to protect it from dehydration.

To encourage skin healing… Just as mineral pink salt in a bath provides relief to sore muscles and stiff limbs (due to the presence of calcium and other trace minerals), it also strengthens skin tissue and encourages damaged areas to heal.

If you have irritated skin… Because it promotes better skin hydration, mineral pink salt can also help to heal and relieve inflammatory skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis, and eczema.

To treat blemish-prone skin… Mineral pink salt tackles congested skin with a three-pronged approach – killing bacteria, drawing out impurities, and soaking up excess oils.

Salts are great exfoliants but are a little too manual for regular use. Instead of scrubbing skin raw, Too Cool For School’s mineral pink salt infused cleansers are much safer options. They contain microscopic salt granules that provide all the same benefits, without the damage.
