Everything You Need To Know About The Ordinary Haircare

Every beauty obsessive is familiar with The Ordinary – the brand who revolutionised an ingredients-first approach to skincare with iconic products like the Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution and Buffet serum. This year, the brand has expanded into the haircare category with three new launches to accompany the already best-selling (and TikTok famous!) Multi-Peptide Serum For Hair Density. The new additions consist of a shampoo (which doubles up as a body wash), a conditioner, and a hydrating scalp serum. That’s right, your shower is about to get a serious upgrade…

Here’s everything you need to know about The Ordinary haircare.

It’s science-first

Just like The Ordinary’s skincare range, the haircare products are evidence-based, science-backed, and ingredient-led. The minimalistic formulas hero key ingredients that follow facts, not trends. You’ll notice that sulphates (an ingredient sometimes demonised by the ‘clean beauty’ movement) are featured – they’re an incredibly effective cleansing ingredient which helps to remove excess sebum, pollution, and product residue. The Sulphate Cleanser For Body & Hair features a low level of SLES-2, a non-irritating and non-sensitising sulphate which won’t disrupt the skin barrier, irritate eyes or skin, and is sustainably sourced and biodegradable.

It’s focused on hair and scalp health

Hair becomes damaged by things like rough cleansing and styling or excessive use of heat tools. These can break the outer layer of the hair shaft, which exposes the rough surface texture beneath and causes hair to look dull and damaged. The products are all formulated with the ultimate goal of improving hair health – the Behentrimonium Chloride 2 Conditioner contains behentrimonium chloride, which coats the outside of the hair to minimise tangling, reduce breakage, and give the hair a smooth, shiny appearance, and the shampoo is formulated with mild cleansing agents which don’t leave hair feeling stripped.

In addition, the products also take into account that the skin of our scalp doesn’t always get the TLC it needs… Over-washing hair can disrupt the scalp’s sebum levels, damage its skin barrier, and lead to dryness and irritation, so like the skin on the rest of our body, the scalp needs to be hydrated and moisturised to stay healthy. Natural Moisturising Factors + HA For Scalp works just like a skincare serum to protect the scalp’s skin barrier and support scalp hydration.

It’s suitable for all hair types

Because the products are focused on improving hair and scalp health, rather than addressing specific hair concerns, they’re suitable for all hair types and conditions. Whether your hair is dry oily, long, short, straight, curly, thick, or thin, all four of the products in the range are suitable for all hair, including colour-treated hair – and are also suitable for people with sensitive skin.

It keeps things simple

Shopping for haircare can be overwhelming with hundreds of serums, scrubs, solutions, and masks joining our shampoo and conditioner in the shower tray. This four-piece collection goes back to basics and has a ‘does what it says on the tin’ approach to haircare. A shampoo that doubles as a body wash, a conditioner that works so well it completely cuts out the need for any leave-in treatments, and serums which are applied to clean, dry hair, and don’t need to be rinsed out. After trying out the products myself, I can already see that my hair looks and feels better for having a more minimal routine.
