12 Salon Treatments You Can DIY At Home

Lockdown 3.0 has confined us to the four walls of our homes (again) and if you were due a nail/hair/waxing appointment, you may have been caught short. To help tide you over until you can get back to your favourite salons again, we’ve got together a list of DIY salon treatments that you can do from the comfort of your own home. Whether you’re in desperate need of a gel removal or you’re just experimenting with temporary hair colour to pass the time, keep reading and check out our to-do list.

Trim your fringe

If you sport a fringe, there can be nothing more irritating than when it starts getting into your eyes. If side-swept bangs aren’t you’re thing, then you might want to take things into your own hands and give your fringe a trim – but please don’t just go wild (you don’t want to look like one of those viral videos). Follow our step-by-step guide from hairdressing pro, Melissa Timperley, and remember to go back to the safe hands of your hairdresser as soon as they can open again.

Whiten your teeth

Getting whiter teeth without visiting the dentist (or paying dentist prices) has become so much more common, but with it comes the horror stories of sensitised teeth. If you’re looking to give it a go, then you need to try the Spotlight Oral Care Teeth Whitening System. Developed by dentists, you can be assured that this whitening kit won’t ruin your teeth and will have them looking several shades lighter. This kit contains a 14-day course of hydrogen peroxide whitening strips and a full-sized whitening tooth paste to maintain the results. Simply set aside an hour of your day to wear the strips and you’ll soon see the results for yourself.

Dermaplaning

Heard the buzz about getting rid of peach fuzz? Yep, we’re obsessed with dermaplaning too. Dermaplaning is about shaving away the small hairs (or peach fuzz) from your face, resulting in a smoother, softer complexion that allows for flawless makeup application. It also helps to scrape away dead skin cells and surface impurities, in turn allowing your skincare to be more effective. Get your hands on the Kitsch Eco-Friendly Dermaplaners to see what all the hype is about.

Microneedling

Microneedling works by creating tiny punctures in the skin, which in turn stimulate the skin to create more collagen, as well as allowing for improved absorption of your favourite products. Try it out for yourself at home with the Brushworks Micro Needle Derma Roller. Just make sure not to press too hard and always disinfect thoroughly between uses.

Gel removal

Still sporting festive nail art in January? We know a lot of us are in the same boat wishing that our nail salons were still open. If your gel nails have grown out, are chipped, or you just want them off, then you need the Gel Removal Wraps from Le Mini Macaron. Soak your nails for 15 minutes and the gel polish will simply lift off. Please, please don’t peel off your gels without soaking first – you’ll risk damaging your natural nails and nobody wants that.

Get a mani-pedi

If bare nails aren’t your thing (we hear you) and you’ve got a lot more time on your hands (no pun intended), why not treat yourself to an at-home mani-pedi? Le Mini Macaron have got all your gel nail needs covered and we’re adding the Rose Crème Gel Manicure Kit straight to our haul immediately. Featuring a gel polish, LED lamp, cuticle stick, nail file, and remover pads, this is the ultimate gel kit to get a salon-worthy mani-pedi from the comfort of your sofa.

Brow grooming

Sure, fluffy, bushy brows are all the rage in 2021, but there’s a fine line between on-trend brows and overgrown unruliness. To keep your brows in shape, reach for the Brushworks Precision Eyebrow Razors. These brow razors have been designed to help you define and perfect your brows, without the pain of tweezing and waxing. The precision edges allow you to take hairs away from exactly where you want to, making it easier to avoid any bald brow patches.

Dye your hair

If there was ever a time to experiment with your hair colour, it’s now. Changing up your hair game won’t only pass the time, but it will also look great too. If you want to switch it up without the commitment, try out the Shrine Drop It Hair Dye Kits. Simply mix the drops with your everyday conditioner, leave on the hair to develop, and you’ll end up with perfectly tinted tresses that are bang on trend. Simply customise the amount of drops depending on the desired intensity of your results, or mix colours together for a truly unique colour.

Pro-level facial

If there’s one thing we’re definitely missing, it’s regular facials, because is there anything more relaxing than having your skincare done for you? If you’re missing getting the pro-level results and you’re struggling with mask/stress/life-related breakouts, then it might be time to invest in the FOREO Espada Blue Light Acne Treatment. This revolutionary skincare tool uses the power of blue LED light combined with T-Sonic pulsations to help banish your breakouts for good. It’ll get rid of acne-causing bacteria in no time, adding a new level to your at-home skincare regime.

Hair smoothing treatment

Missing smooth, salon-finish locks? We feel you. If the frizz is getting too much or you just want that salon-level shine, then you need the O’wow At-Home Smoothing Treatment Kit. This treatment has everything you need to get the softest, smoothest locks for up to three months, which will (hopefully) take you up to your next appointment with your hairdresser.

Brow tinting

If there’s one thing we can’t live without, it’s brows that always look their best – after all, they do transform the whole shape of your face. Tinting is one of the quickest ways to getting your brows back in shape and whilst we’ll never claim to have to expertise of a professional, sometimes you have to take things into your own hands. To help give your brows a hint of fullness, why not give the Makeup Revolution Brow Dye Tint Kit a go for a quick and easy at-home solution to your brow woes.

Waxing

If you’re a long-term waxer, then shaving during lockdown is just not going to cut it. We’ve all heard the horror stories of DIY waxing, but Bliss are here to answer all our prayers and make at-home waxing a breeze. Simply warm in the microwave, smooth on, and pull away, and you’ll be left feeling like you’ve just left the salon.
