Huns That Hustle: Mel Blue of Unicorn Cosmetics

In honour of International Women’s Day, we chatted with ten kick-ass, powerful women who have broken through the glass ceiling and founded their own beauty brands.

Meet Mel Blue, self-confessed beauty obsessive and founder of Unicorn Cosmetics.

Founded: 2016

Location: Rochester, Kent

Motto: “Always do you, and don’t let anyone tell you that something can’t be done!”

On what inspired her to start her own brand…

“There was so much more creativity put into the fashion and hair industries, but I didn’t see that in makeup, so I combined my passion for makeup with my creative side…”

On how Unicorn Cosmetics captures the attention of its audience…

“Our products are innovative, they set the trends rather than follow them, so we match well to young people who want to show self-expression and have a creative edge.”

On the biggest challenge she’s had to overcome in running a business…

“The behind-the-scenes of the industry can be hard. I see brands that say they stand for female empowerment, when behind closed doors it’s a million miles from the truth. I’m glad that Beauty Bay are celebrating International Women’s Day so we can make people aware of this and create change.”

On how she hopes to change the landscape for future female entrepreneurs…

“I hope I can show that it’s possible to grown something from nothing. The industry is no longer dominated by male CEOs – female entrepreneurs can show support to other women and help with advice and business knowledge. Both especially valuable if you;ve never studied business or had contacts in the industry.”

On her advice for women who want to start their own business…

“It’s hard work at times, but if you put in the work, it will happen for you. Find your niche, stick to it, and don’t be afraid to ask for help from those who are already successful.”
